Auto-dimming mirrors work to prevent this from happening with special electrochemical gels. These gels lie behind the mirror surfaces and connect to proprietary electrodes. When high-intensity beams hit these mirrors, special cameras or other light-sensitive technologies inform an onboard microprocessor of the situation. This small computer then uses special signals to tell the gel to darken in color, thus reducing headlight intensity and improving driver vision. It is no exaggeration to say that these technologies can and do save lives.
